DRUG CZAR TESTIFIES BEFORE SENATE APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE

JOHN WALTERS DISCUSSES CURRENT U. S. DRUG USE TRENDS AND PRESIDENT BUSH'S NATIONAL DRUG CONTROL STRATEGY

(Washington, D. C.)–John P. Walters, Director of National Drug Control Policy, testified today before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Treasury and General Government. The hearing, held to review the Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) FY 2003 budget request, gave Mr. Walters an opportunity to discuss the current state of affairs in the Federal Government's efforts to reduce the drug problem in America.

"I was pleased to come to Capitol Hill today and brief the Senate on the progress of the Administration's anti-drug efforts," said Walters. "The President's goals of lowering youth and adult drug use by 10 percent in two years and by 25 percent in 5 years are both aggressive and achievable. By rallying parents, teachers, and community leaders to the cause, and continuing to administer ONDCP's highly effective programs including the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program, the Counterdrug Technology Assessment Center, and the Drug-Free Communities Program, we will make positive strides in making America's drug problem smaller."

"ONDCP has a unique dual mission of serving as the President's primary Executive Branch support for counter-drug policy and program oversight while simultaneously managing our own diverse programmatic responsibilities. The budget the President has requested for ONDCP will help us achieve the ambitious goals he has set," Walters said.
